Cracks, Holes and Failing Plaster
Walls tell on a house. A hairline crack climbing from a door frame, a dent where a knob met the hallway, a brown ring on the ceiling under a bathroom, a patch of plaster that sounds hollow when you knock on it: each one is a small repair that gets bigger the longer it waits. Painting over any of them only hides the problem for a season.
Older homes around North Haven, Hamden and New Haven often have plaster walls over wood lath, and plaster ages differently than drywall. It cracks as the house moves with the seasons, and in places it loosens from the lath behind it. Drywall dents, tears at the paper, and shows every nail pop and taped seam once a glossy coat goes over it.
The repair has to match what's on the wall. Plaster gets patched like plaster and drywall like drywall, then the area is sanded flush so the finished surface reads as one smooth plane under paint, with no ridge or shadow where the fix was made.
Church Vaults and Private Hallways
Cloudland puts its experience this way: “We have repaired plaster in churches with vaulted ceilings, and we have fixed drywall in private homes.” Both halves matter. A vaulted church ceiling is a question of height, access and patience. A hallway in a private home is a question of neatness, because you walk past it every day.
The same crew that handles vaulted ceilings and open stairways on interior repaints brings that comfort with height and awkward access to plaster and drywall repair. Floors, windows and skylights get protected before the work begins, and small or valuable items are put away by the homeowner, with larger furniture protected or moved by the crew.
Ray Sola has painted houses since 1985, and repair work is where that history shows. He knows which cracks will return if they're only filled and which need to be opened up and rebuilt. His estimate puts the plan in writing, so you see what gets repaired and what gets painted before anyone starts.
One Contractor, No Gap Between Trades
Most repair jobs fall apart in the handoff. One trade patches the wall, a second trade arrives weeks later to paint, and in between the patch dries and the schedule drifts. When Cloudland does the repair, the paint comes from the same company on the same job, so there's no second contractor to find and no second appointment to chase.
It also helps the finish. Fresh patch compound soaks up paint differently than the wall around it, and an unprimed patch shows through as a dull, blotchy square. A crew that repairs and paints the wall itself can prime the repair, let it cure and match the sheen, so the repaired spot disappears into the rest of the room.
Schedule and cleanliness count too. Joanie Mastriano wrote in a Google review that “His workers arrived When scheduled and were very efficient.” Sanding plaster and drywall makes fine dust, so the room gets covered up first and cleaned after. Ask for a free, written, no-obligation estimate and Ray walks through the repair, the paint and the order of work together.
