Ray Sola, in residential painting since 1985

Raymond Sola, president of Cloudland Paintworks, has worked in residential painting since 1985. That is forty years of painting, wallpaper installation and removal, estimating, customer service and property maintenance, and all of it sits behind the company he formed in 2004. The stops below are the short version of how he got here.

How Cloudland got started

  1. 1985

    Residential painting

    Ray goes into the trade

He starts in residential painting with a degree in Industrial Technology and Construction Management from Central Connecticut State University behind him. The work grows past the brush: wallpaper installation and removal, estimating, customer service and property maintenance all become part of his day.

  2. Paint store

    A local paint store

    Time behind the counter

Along the way Ray works in a local paint store. That is where his working knowledge of paints and stains comes from, and it is the knowledge he brings when a homeowner needs help choosing a color and a finish.

  3. 1995

    A customer who stayed

Before the company had a name

Henry L., whose house was built in 1914, has worked with Ray over a dozen times since 1995, years before there was a Cloudland to call. He is still quoted on the testimonials page.

  4. 2004

    Cloudland Paintworks

    Ray forms the company

In 2004 Ray forms Cloudland Paintworks and brings together seasoned painting professionals and people who are eager to learn residential painting. The company works out of 44 Cloudland Road in North Haven.

  5. Today

    New Haven County

    Newly built, historic, condo

The crew paints newly built homes, historic homes and condos in North Haven and the towns around it, including Guilford, Madison, Middletown and Meriden.

The crew keeps learning

Cloudland's painters routinely go to conferences and hands-on workshops to learn about new products and how to use them. They are Fine Paints of Europe Certified Painters, and every one of them is lead-safe certified, summer interns included. If your house predates 1978, that matters, and there is a whole page on how lead-safe prep works.

The company has its own shop with a custom spray booth. Kitchen cabinet doors are taken there to be sprayed, which keeps the mess out of your kitchen; the details are on the cabinet refinishing page. The two photographs below are the shop and the exterior: a chair frame being refinished among the paint shelves, and a cedar soffit taking its stain.

Who calls Cloudland

Cloudland describes its customers in four short lines. They are also the standard the crew works to.

  • They appreciate good work when they see it.

  • They value a job done well by people who respect their property.

  • They recognize craftsmanship.

  • They know communication is key.

The homes are newly built, historic or condos. The work covers exteriors (stains and paints), interiors (ceilings, walls and trim), wallpaper installation and removal, kitchen cabinets, wood ceilings, siding and decks. The full list is on the services page.

“We have worked with Ray Sola on exterior painting and maintenance of our 1914-built house interior over a dozen times since 1995, even before the company was named Cloudland. In each case Ray and his crew talk over the repairs we need, the best way to make them and then they carry out high quality work.”

Henry L., from the Cloudland site. Eight more homeowners are quoted on the testimonials page.
